Chavín Culture
900 BC – 200 BC · peak 500 BC
The Chavín culture (c. 900–200 BC) developed in the central Andes around the ceremonial center of Chavín de Huántar. It created a shared artistic language with hybrid deities, stone sculpture and a ritual network linking coast, highlands and forest. Its religious and stylistic influence preceded later major Andean traditions.
