British Empire (peak)
1914 AD – 1947 AD · peak 1920 AD
The British Empire reached its peak territorial extent under the House of Windsor following the 1919 Treaty of Versailles, governing approximately 35.5 million square kilometers. It acquired new League of Nations mandates in the Middle East, including Iraq, Palestine, and Transjordan, administered from London. Post-war economic strain and rising nationalist movements led to a period of decolonization, initiated by the independence of India and Pakistan in 1947.
