Early Modern Era
British Empire (early)
1607 AD – 1750 AD · peak 1750 AD
The early British Empire developed in the 17th and 18th centuries through North American colonies, Caribbean sugar islands, trading companies and naval bases. London consolidated maritime power after wars against the Dutch, France and Spain, while the East India Company began to dominate parts of India. The loss of the Thirteen Colonies in 1783 redirected imperial strategy toward Asia, the Pacific and Africa.
