Early Modern Era
Ottoman Empire
1451 AD – 1750 AD · peak 1683 AD
The Ottoman Empire arose in northwestern Anatolia and, after the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, became a Mediterranean, Balkan and Middle Eastern power. Under Suleiman the Magnificent it reached its highest military and administrative prestige, controlling routes between Europe, Asia and Africa. The imperial system integrated provinces, religious millets and military corps such as the Janissaries, while later facing European rivalries and internal pressures.
