Aztec Empire
1428 AD – 1450 AD · peak 1450 AD
The Aztec Empire, or Triple Alliance, was established in 1428 AD between the city-states of Tenochtitlan, Texcoco, and Tlacopan. Based in the island capital of Tenochtitlan, the empire supported a population of 200,000 through chinampa agriculture and a tribute system encompassing hundreds of central Mexican polities. It collapsed in 1521 AD following a Spanish-led siege and the introduction of European diseases.
