Colonial Era
Dutch Colonial Empire
1816 AD – 1913 AD · peak 1900 AD
During the 19th century, the Netherlands consolidated control over the Dutch East Indies, with Batavia as the administrative center. The colonial government implemented the Cultivation System (1830–1870), which mandated that Indonesian farmers dedicate a portion of their land to export crops like coffee and sugar for the Dutch treasury. This system stabilized the Dutch economy but caused significant hardship and famine among the local populations.
